Fuji Gran Fondo Clas...
Gran Fondos originated in Italy but are catching on like wildfire in the new world. Gran Fondos are long, timed rides with a mass-start, run over closed and open roadways, with full support and post-ride podium presentations, and usually a fun party as well.
If you want to feel like a veteran Italian racer, or just want to challenge yourself over a long distance, the Fuji Gran Fondo Classico 1.3 is the bike to ride in it. In a Gran Fondo bike you want comfort without sacrificing performance.Fuji accomplishes this by giving you a slightly longer head tube along with a more-relaxed geometry so you’re more upright.
You might argue that you’re less aero in this position, but really even the pros can stay areo for only so long. We mortals aren’t built that way. The longer wheelbase on the Classico also gives you more stability for cornering in crowds or snaking through a long descent.
Carbon is the popular choice for long rides because its’ lightweight and strong, with just enough flex to reduce fatigue. The Gran Fondo Classico frame is made from Fuji’s proprietary C5 high modulus carbon blend. High modulus carbon means a stiffer blend of fibers, which results in less flex and better transmission of power spent.
The C5 frame is further refined with a Shimano press fit bottom bracket and tapered head tube. An oversized bottom bracket creates more surface area to attach the down and seat tubes, thereby creating a very stiff pedaling area.
The larger press fit design also allows Fuji to move the frame material around, thinning out the seat stays and strengthening the chain stays, which puts the carbon where it matters to you most. Double water bottle mounts are there for your hydration needs.
Fuji offers high-end components on their Gran Fondo line, because on a long ride you want lightweight technology alongside reliable shifting and braking.
The Shimano 105 series is legendary for providing cost efficient componentry at the highest value and performance. The Oval Concepts 50/34 crankset along with an 11/28 cassette helps you keep that magical cadence you need for long rides, regardless of the terrain.
The shifters are silky smooth and the chain easily finds its sprocket with the 105 derailleurs. Dual pivot alloy brakes help you control your descent and stop quickly at water stations or the finish line. When the horn blows perch yourself on the Oval Concepts R300 saddle, designed for comfort, although still lightweight, and find your best hand position on the Oval Concepts 300S alloy handlebars.
Finally, the Vera Corsa wheelset matches perfectly with the Vittoria Zaffiro tires, an industry favorite for rolling efficiency and resisting punctures, so you’ll finish the ride strong and not in the back of a van. Bellissimo!
GT Grade Carbon Ulte...
In case you haven’t realized, road bikes have gotten a lot tougher in recent years. While you probably still don’t want to try to duck onto an entirely unpaved descent with your twitchy carbon race frame, manufacturers have started investing in a class of bikes that bridge the gap between slammed road bikes and race-ready ‘cross frames.
If you’re interested in exploring that enticing gap, invest in the GT Grade Carbon Ultegra Complete Road Bike to get a dose of gravel, ‘cross, and road capabilities, along with a build kit that will inspire unabashed envy from the most cynical self-sponsored cyclists.
GT uses fiberglass-reinforced carbon to shape the Grade Carbon’s endurance frame, strategically shaping the featherweight tubing to disperse road vibrations through the frame to limit aching and fatigue during long rides.
A widened down tube and reinforced seat stays lend the frame lateral rigidity and responsiveness when you throw watts into the pedals to climb along shady, weather-beaten backroads, while the longer, slimmer fork blades help the fork manage bumps, ruts, and other off-road features without throwing you around.
A wider down tube and head tube positioned at a more relaxed angle than traditional road frames both contribute to improved stability, with the head tube orienting you in a more upright position that doesn’t present as much of a strain on your back and shoulders during long days in the saddle.
Beefy 28mm Continental tires anchor the Grade Carbon and provide a plush, compliant ride whether you’re pedaling your standard road loop or ducking off to explore new bike paths and chip-sealed roads that no longer guarantee flat tires.
As for the build kit, an elegant Shimano Ultegra drivetrain keeps your shifts smooth and snappy, and your 28mm tires come wrapped around Stan’s NoTubes Grail rims spinning seductively on DT Swiss 240 hubs.
When you do need to slow down, Ultegra-level Shimano hydraulic disc brakes stop reliably, regardless of whether you’re also attempting to ride through a passing rainstorm, rounding out one of the most impressively-spec’d bikes you’re likely to see in this category.
